Bubble Club Presents: Little Axe featuring Skip McDonald
Oct 5 2012Oct 5 2012
Skip McDonald returning to the Bubble Club, this time with his band Little Axe. Boundary-pushing blues as you’ve never heard it, witty and powerful. Hailing from Dayton Ohio, Skip McDonald helped form the house band for the pioneering rap label Sugar Hill, backing classic recordings by Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaata, including the seminal White Lines and The Message.
Skip went on to work closely with Adrian Sherwood on many of projects for the On-U Sound label, as well as spearheading the band Tackhead and working with Living Colour.
During his time working with On-U Sound, Skip collaborated with Junior Delgado, Bim Sherman, Dub Syndicate and African Head Charge; he has been the prime mover behind Little Axe since around 1992.
Under a name inspired by Bob Marley's Small Axe and gospel singer Willmer 'Little Ax' Broadnax, the debut album Wolf That House Built was a personal take on blues and dub, and was released to critical acclaim in 1994.
The second Little Axe album, Slow Fuse, was also well received. Both albums featured tabla player Talvin Singh, and Skip continued to play with musical genres by fusing blues with electronic music, drawing comparisons to Moby's Play album.
If You Want Loyalty Buy A Dog is Little Axe's sixth album, again a collaboration with dub-master producer Adrian Sherwood, and the band hit the road during the summer of 2012 to promote it.
